SW Adventures – Seasonal Tours and Multi-day Excursions!

Santa Fe Walkabouts offers New Mexico Adventures Steeped in Culture

While the majority of our excursions are day trips, scheduled to start at our clients’ request, we will be offering tours with set departure times beginning in March 2014. Santa Fe Walkabouts will also be developing multi-day explorations in New Mexico that include a bicycling adventure in the southern part of the state and a fun-filled expedition along Historic Route 66!

Explore the Heart of New Mexico – Salinas Pueblo Missions and Mountainair

Join us for a 2 day / 1 night adventure to the heart of New Mexico where we will experience the rich culture of the Pueblo Indians, learn about the changes brought about by the Colonial Spanish Empire, and be embraced by the warm hospitality of Mountainair’s present day inhabitants.

Day One
Meet in Santa Fe at 10AM and depart for Albuquerque where we’ll tour the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and have lunch at the Pueblo Harvest Cafe before heading south to Isleta Pueblo. At Isleta, we’ll visit St. Augustine Mission, one of the oldest Missions in the United States. We will then continue on to Abo, the westernmost of the three villages that comprise the Salinas Pueblo Missions. Much of the original Pueblo is unexcavated but we’ll experience the heritage of the Tompiro people by viewing the petroglyphs they left behind. We’ll also walk through the remains of the San Gregorio de Abo which was completed around 1627 and learn about the legacy of the Franciscan friars. We’ll end the day with dinner at the Ancient Cities Cafe and turn in for the night at the Turner Inn.
Day Two
After breakfast, we’ll start the day by visiting Gran Quivira, another Tompiro speaking Pueblo. This is the largest of the 3 Pueblos at the Salinas Ruins and we’ll be able to view the structures that the Native people once inhabited, along with the places where they held religious ceremonies. We’ll also walk through the two churches that were built at Gran Quivira – San Isidro and San Buenaventura. After lunch at the Alpine Alley in Mountainair, we’ll visit the third and final pueblo, Quarai, which was populated by Tiwa speaking people from about 1250AD until the late 1670s.
